While millions of Americans are struggling with hunger due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a smaller subset of the population has experienced only minor impacts. Donating your stimulus will allow SOS to purchase additional food, thus serving the dual purpose of stimulating the economy while helping struggling families.
As the most expensive County in the entire state of Florida, the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated financial circumstances for those already struggling and created new economic hardships for many who had never previously relied on SOS’s services. As a result, SOS Pantries served 124% more clients in 2020 than in 2019, totaling 145,365 client visits to our food pantries and distributions. A September 2020 survey showed that 85% of SOS clients were financially impacted by COVID-19, affecting their ability to pay rent, utilities, and/or put food on the table.
In a second survey conducted in February 2021, 74% of clients reported that they depend on SOS food distributions for most or all of their food. Since March 2020, SOS has distributed more than 3.2 million pounds (or the equivalent of 2.8 million meals) of food to families and individuals in need across Monroe County. This number includes thousands of 10-40lb USDA Farmers to Families Food Boxes containing fresh produce, as well as high quality meat and dairy products. SOS food distributions provide hunger-relief and financial relief by freeing up funds that would have gone towards groceries, to other pressing living expenses.
Volunteer, fundraise, or donate today to help SOS feed our Keys community and recover from COVID-19.
